It was the first island to be colonized but actually is has the smallest population of the archipelago. People likes to refer to this place like “coming back to the old times” because it’s a scape from citizen life.

Santa Cruz Highlands tour

Santa Cruz highlands has a dramatically change of the fauna depending of the altitude, a variety of animals especially birds live on the wild. 

 

The first stop of this trip is a wonderful volcanic formation named “The Twins or Gemelos” a spectacular panoramic landscape surrounded by a Scalesia Forest, also is home of many land birds as Darwin finches.  

 

The second stop of your visit it’s the Giant Tortoises Sanctuary, were many Giant Galapagos live on the wild.

Santa Cruz Highlands, Wild Galapagos Giant Tortoise

Charles Darwin Research Station

Breeding program center to recover the population of specific giant tortoises from different islands, preservation and conservation program. The only place where it’s possible to appreciate baby giant tortoises.

Tortuga Bay Beach with Kayaks

A white sand beach on the south area of Santa Cruz Island by walking it’s a 2 ½ km surrounded by a cactus forest, it is a good spot to relax and sun bathe, or alternatively to swim or kayaking.

• Fauna: white tip shark, green sea turtle, marine iguanas, Tree Darwin Finch. 

• Flora: Galapagos carpetweed, Galapagos incense tree, Opuntia Cactus, Candelabro Cactus, Magrove Species.

Las Grietas also known as the Neptune’s oasis

Las Grietas is located on the south coast of the island of Santa Cruz three kilometers away from Puerto Ayora. It is formed by lava fissures that form two large volcanic walls crossed by an arm of sea that enters underground and is mixed with underground rivers of fresh water that descends from the mountains of the highlands. 

 

Activities: Hiking, Snorkeling, Photography.

Recommended: Garrapatero Beach

A 3 km golden sand beach, a great place to relax or do some snorkeling o kayaking of course you will be sharing the area with flamingos probably, sometimes sea turtles and blue footed boobies.
